Pre-conference Workshops
Tuesday 13 May 2025

There will be three optional pre-conference workshops offered with an additional cost and will include a light afternoon tea. Workshops will be held in building 11 on campus at University of Canberra (prior to the welcome BBQ at University of Canberra).

Workshop 1 What is social marketing?  Facilitated by Professor Ross Gordon and Dr Gauri Laud.

This introductory workshop will explore the transformative potential of social marketing for behaviour and social change. Designed to provide a solid foundation, this session will help participants understand the essence of social marketing—what it is and what it is not. The workshop will cover critical topics, including key principles, practical tools, and proven social marketing tactics. The workshop features engaging activities that allow participants to apply social marketing concepts and strategies to practical scenarios, fostering a deeper understanding of its core tenets.  Participants will explore evidence of social marketing’s effectiveness in driving behaviour change and enhancing welfare programs. They will also learn how to apply social marketing strategies in their work for meaningful impact.

Who Should Attend?

  • Professionals working in organizations focused on behaviour and social change topics, such as health, climate change, equality, and more.
  • Students and researchers new to the field of social marketing.
  • Policymakers seeking to leverage social marketing to influence positive behaviour change for the greater social good.

Workshop 2 How to convert your conference paper into a journal article? Facilitated by Dr Nadia Zainuddin, Founding Associate Editor Journal of Social Impact in Business Research, President Australian Association of Social Marketing and Dr Kim Feddema, Executive committee member Australian Association of Social Marketing, Edith Cowan University.

Conference papers are a wonderful opportunity to test new ideas and seek feedback to refine these ideas for eventual journal manuscript preparation. Preparing and writing conference papers are also good practice and training in academic writing, particularly for Higher Degree Research students and junior researchers. Participants will be taken through the process of using conference papers as a springboard for eventual journal manuscripts for submission to academic journals. The workshop will cover the key considerations when converting a conference paper into a journal manuscript, including:

  • Why it is a good idea to convert conference papers into journal articles.
  • The dos and don’ts of converting your conference paper into a journal article.
  • Special Issues – are they worth a shot?
  • Now I’ve got my conference paper, which journal should I target?
  • Incorporating feedback from the conference review process and presentation.

Who should attend?

This session would offer the greatest benefit to practitioners, HDR students, junior researchers, and Early Career Academics. Participants may bring along a conference paper or abstract that they would like to convert into a journal manuscript if they wish.

Workshop 3 Research methods for social marketing – Joan Young, partner Alliance Strategic Research and Kathy Benson, Director, Behavioural Economics and Research, The Cabinet Office, Department of the Premier and Cabinet, Queensland Government.

This interactive workshop will draw on a series of case-studies to demonstrate how to design best practice social marketing research to inform effective behaviour change strategy. It will provide an overview of research methods and key techniques for market research to inform, test, refine and evaluate social marketing initiatives. A key take-away will be how to write an effective social marketing research brief.

Who should attend?

  • Social marketers at the planning, implementation or refinement stages
  • Researchers seeking to hone their skills in social marketing
  • Academics interested in the application of social marketing research techniques
